Iconografia Sfântului Gherasim de la Iordan în pictura murală românească

Abstract
St. Gerasimus of the Jordan – founder of the monasteries in Palestine – died on March 5, 475 AD. The Latin and Syrian calendars honor his memory on March 5. In most Greek calendars the saint is mentioned on March 4, but there are certain calendars – related to the status of Studios Monastery – where his commemoration takes place on March 20. This article presents a brief overview of the evolution of St. Gerasimus iconography over the centuries, from the first known image, preserved in the mural painting of St. Anthony's monastery in Novgorod, to the examples of some of the seventeenth-century icons or some illustrated manuscripts from the eighteenth century. A special role is given to the description of the scenes contains The Story of St. Gerasimus' lion preserved in the Moldavian mural paintings of the 16th century. This story is inspired by one of the chapters of John Moschus' The Spiritual Meadow and has many similarities with The Story of St. Jerome and the Lion. The frescoes of the Humor and Voroneţ monasteries have preserved the Slavonic inscriptions, thanks to which we can today reconstruct the contents of the mural cycles dedicated to this story.

The Role of the Exploration Artist: Louis Choris and the Kotzebue Expedition, 1815-1818

Abstract
In 1816, the second Russian circumnavigation of the globe, led by Lieutenant Otto von Kotzebue, called on the west coast of North America and Hawai’i. Expeditionary artist Louis Choris documented the indigenous people of Alaska, California, and Hawai’i with the intent of furthering anthropological research into the origin of the various races. The resulting Voyage pittoresque autour du monde, avec des portraits de sauvages d’Amérique, d’Asie, d’Afrique, et des iles du Grand océan, containing 105 hand-colored illustrations, is one of the first great lithographic works of exploration. Interestingly, one character of this paper had peripheral connections to the Romanian lands: Lieutenant Kotzebue was the son of the successful playwright August von Kotzebue (1761-1819) who had two other sons, the navigator’s brothers, Karl von Kotzebue, the Russian consul in Jassy, and Wilhelm von Kotzebue, a traveller, diplomat and writer, who settled by marriage in Moldavia. He authored the delightful volume, Aus der Moldau. Bilder und Skizzen, translated into Romanian under the title Din Moldova. Tablouri și schițe din 1850, and the novel Lascăr Viorescu, inspired by the Moldavian elite's morals.

CĂLIN DEMETRESCU
L’ameublement du marquis de Seignelay : un aperçu virtuel

Résumé
Fils aîné de Jean-Baptiste Colbert (1619-1683), Jean-Baptiste-Antoine Colbert, marquis de Seignelay (1651-1690), obtint la survivance des charges de son père dès février 1669, et fut nommé secrétaire d’Etat à la Marine, fonction qu’il exerça entre 1683 et 1690. Colbert de Seignelay hérita également de l’immense fortune de son père et de ses importantes collections de peintures, sculptures et objets d’art. L’inventaire après décès qu’on dressa en 1690 comptait non moins de trois volumes, aujourd’hui perdus. Deux documents inédits découverts aux Archives nationales de Paris, contenant la liste des reprises matrimoniales de sa veuve, Catherine-Thérèse de Goüyon de Matignon-Thorigny (1662-1699), permettent cependant de se former une image de la richesse de
l'ameublement du marquis de Seignelay, ainsi que de faire des rapprochements avec quelques pièces d’art décoratif du temps de Louis XIV, encore conservées.

Làszlo Moholy-Nagy: Photographic Research in the Modern Era

Abstract
Original research conducted on sites throughout Hungary and Serbia. From private archives, museum collections, unique libraries, schools, historical synagogues, gymnasziums, gravesites and documents in institutions to travel throughout cities, locations to families, scholars, curators, writers and people related to the artist László Moholy-Nagy. Since childhood beginning in 1895 in Bácsborsód to his appointment to the Bauhaus in Germany in 1923.

ADRIAN-SILVAN IONESCU
Silvan și caricatura politică (1989–1999)

Résumé
Architecte et artiste, Silvan Ionescu (1909–1999) a eu une longue carrière de portraitiste pour la presse culturelle ou quotidienne, autant avant qu’après la Deuxième Guerre Mondiale. Mais il ne s’est jamais aventuré dans la thématique politique, tout en préférant d’illustrer la vie littéraire ou théâtrale du moment. Principe dont il ne s’est pas éloigné pendant 50 ans. Même pas dans son intimité il ne faisait pas d’esquisses aux sujets liés aux tristes réalités socialistes, même s’il y avait assez de raisons d’ironies à l’adresse des grands du jour, tellement ridicules par leur comportement et leurs décisions totalement impopulaires.
Ses portraits d’acteurs et d’écrivains ont été publiés, entre 1939–1945, dans les périodiques Ordinea, Cuvântul, Viaţa, Scena, Vremea, Cortina, Bis et Spectator. Après 1948, lorsque les communistes ont pris le pouvoir en Roumanie, l’artiste, fidèle à sa thématique culturelle, continue sa collaboration avec les revues de spécialité, Luceafărul, Gazeta Literară – ultérieurement devenue România literară –, Contemporanul, Teatrul et Secolul 20. Même Urzica a publié certains de ses portraits. Seulement en 1990, après ses 80 ans, en passant beaucoup de temps à la maison, devant la télé, captivé par l’avalanche des événements, il se met à faire, pour son propre plaisir, les portraits des hommes politiques passagers, sans aucune intention de les publier. Toujours pour son propre amusement, il aborde la composition humoristique suscitée par la vie de retraité, les privations de toutes sortes, les prix toujours plus grands, les queues pour les aliments, la dévalorisation de la monnaie nationale, la misère, le danger des chiens vagabonds et des rats, etc. Aucune de ces compositions, à jamais perdues dans les innombrables mappes de dessins, n’a été publiée.
22 ans après la mort de l’artiste Silvan, le temps est venu pour que ces essais graphiques soient publiés, afin d’amuser les contemporains.

Genealogia unui istoric de artă: Sorin Ullea

Abstract
Sorin Ullea (1925–2012) remains in the historiography of the Romanian medieval art as a prominent name, linked to the study of mural painting in Bukovina. He was a Kulturmensch with an open mind who descended from several Moldavian boyar families, having also a princely Phanariot ancestry. On his father’s side, the Ullea family, descendants of the 19th-20th centuries who wrote their family name with double “l”, pretended to have descended from the quasi–legendary “paharnic” Ulea, of Stephen the Great.
Eduard Ullea was the mayor of Botoșani, and Octav Ullea – the brother of Sorin Ullea’s father – was the chief of the Royal Household during the reign of King Michael. The fact that he was first cousin to Lucrețiu Pătrășcanu facilitated the links, before August 23, 1944, between the group of conspirators of the Royal Palace (formed by Mircea Ionnițiu, Baron I. Mocsonyi-Stârcea and others) and the leaders of the Communist Party, then a tiny political party, but with a great future...
The wife of Octav Ullea had also an interesting ancestry, having descended from the family of Hagi-Panteli, important Bucharest merchants, founders of the Lucaci Church, in the Wallachian capital.
It is worth mentioning that Sorin Ullea was first married to Olga, born von Stempel, daughter of Baron Nicolai von Stempel, from a well-known noble family of Baltic origin, with Russian and German genealogical roots. They had a son, Dan, who later became an architect, who was adopted by the second husband of his mother, engineer Dan Râșcanu, great-grandson of the revolutionary boyar Toderiță Râșcanu and nephew of Th. Aug. Râșcanu, writer and historical author. As a consequence of this adoption, the blood descendants of Sorin Ullea bore the name Râșcanu and settled in Germany, before December 1989.

VIRGINIA BARBU
Barbu Brezianu, mondenul traducător al Kalevalei

Abstract
A distinguished intellectual of the Romanian interwar elite, Barbu Brezianu (1909-2008) was a judge, poet, novelist, art history researcher and the most acknowledged Romanian scholar of Brancusi’s work. He also developed a sustained activity as a translator which was a special quality of his writer’s profile. The paper focuses on his main translation endeavour, the Finnish epic Kalevala, from the first idea and edition, in 1938, to the last one, in 1999, sketching some interesting aspects of his personality from the light of time chronicles and archive documents.
